So today was the inaugural IBYFG (refer next post), I was the captain of the basketball team and what I'm feeling right now is pure elation. I am damn proud of this team. We have practiced and trained and fought for each other and this is where we ended up -- CHAMPIONS !! And I have to say we deserved it.
I have to say a few words about each and everyone of my teammates.
Wen Xiang From being just the brother of my friend and someone whom I used to ball with, to someone who has fought and ran and put all his efforts into the team. Wen Xiang, you're someone I am damn glad to have found as a true friend and teammate. No doubt, you're experienced in competition and I too have to listen to you sometimes for your advice. You're cool headed, easily the best shooter on the team and know the game well.
Now you're someone whom I can trust, someone whom I can pass the ball too and know something will happen and you will make the right decisions. Know it or not, you're the heart of this team.
I thoroughly enjoyed playing ball with you and you never skipped training once (well, maybe ytday but since we won today, its excusable). I admire your commitment and love for this game too.
Mun Ping I have to first say if you didn't score that last free throw I would have kicked your ass gao gao. But I have to say you are the youngest member on the team but you play the game with unbelievable maturity. You too have more experience than I in competitions. I really like how you never backed down and continued to fight hard for the team. I know your position is one where you always get the most elbows, bruises, knocks and even cuts, but you never once backed down.
You are also a teammate I can rely on to score when it matters most. And your rebounding is something that has helped the team so much.
I also thank you for your commitment to always make it to training when you can even if you have to take nearly an hour of LRT to and from your house.
Wei Chiang The first person I played basketball in Sunday School with. You had a height advantage no doubt but in training I saw that you weren't as physical under the basket as you could have been. And you were always out-rebounded by smaller guys.
But today, when it mattered most, you stepped up. BIG TIME ! I saw how you boxed out and how you fought for every rebound and made all those shots under the basket. You and Mun Ping were the core of our defence and the opponents had to take the outside shots because they couldn't come in.
You were a calm head. I know at times you wanted to just whack them, I did too but we didn't concede any silly fouls. I know it was damn tiring but you still ran back for defence and I really too have to admit that you play the game with as much effort as you could.
Nyit Yang You were an unexpected addition to the team. I'm sorry I did not call you for any practices but you played the game like you always do and scored quite a few layups. I brought you into the team and trusted you cause you were calm headed and knew when to take the shot and when to slow things down.
I hope to play more with you in the future. You're a reliable teammate !
Kevin From the time in training till now, I too noticed a huge difference. In training you always took the shot, no matter where your teammates or opponents are. But today you passed the ball, moved and then defended well.
You also gave your all even though you had athletics after that. Thank you !
Mike T I'm sorry I couldnt give you more game time but you were a supportive and understanding teammate. You did play well when you came on, especially in the 2nd game against Bodhi where your defence helped us to win the game comfortably.
And you too, never missed one training session. Only you and Wei Chiang came every week without fail. And I won't forget our dim sum sessions too. Damn I'm gonna miss that....
Kai Yuan I hope the game today gave you valuable experience. You don't play the game as often as the rest of us do. But if you practice hard, you can play it well. Thanks for being supportive too.
And of course me. I learnt damn alot. I learnt how to play the game properly, calmly and with maturity. I learnt how to trust my teammates, how to pass and how to lead. I may be the captain of the team but I can say without you people as teammates, I definitely would not have gone this far.
It is officially my first gold medal in basketball and I am damn proud to be the captain of this team.
Thank you, thank you and thank you. I will continue to call you guys out for more games. But first, I owe you guys a meal XD
The Inaugural Inter Buddhist Youth Fellowship Games
I had a great day. Just got back from Catholic High School where BISDS had the first ever Inter Buddhist Youth Fellowship Games (IBYFG). There was basketball (male), captain ball (female), volleyball, athletics and tug-of-war.
I won't go into the details but I would like to dedicate my special thanks to 2 people.
First, would have to be none other than Vanessa. Who would have thought 10 years ago that today Buddhist youths would gather together for their passion for sports and share this fellowship. She started it and made it happen. I think she easily did the work of 10 people and successfully did it all. I so wonder how the Buddhist community would move forward without people like her. She is the one that makes people actually believe that there is a future, not just a future but a bright one. And you can really rely on, hope for and believe in such a person. Such a leader is rare and to be able to work and learn from her is nothing less than a blessing.
Next would be Sumitra. She has the will and determination of a bull and the ability to make things happen. I remember seeing her set up the running track and I was impressed with how she put her head down, worked her ass off and made sure everything was right. Her attitude has obviously rubbed off on her two younger brothers too as they also sweated it out today. I would say that how Sumitra worked with Vanessa is remarkable. Sumitra can take any shit that Vanessa throws at her but she will not back down if she has her own opinion to share. She will do whatever it takes to make something happen successfully.
I have been thru the time of Sumitra without Vanessa and Vanessa without Sumitra. I can safely say that Vanessa with Sumitra is the best way and this two people have utterly amazed me. I look up to them and see unbelievable leadership qualities and strong will to succeed.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to work with both of you.
Anyway not to forget to thank the hundreds of Buddhist youths who came today, the BISDS kalyana mitras, the referees (including Bro Chong, Bro Chee Wai, Bro Vincent) and my beloved Catholic High School for providing the venue. I was so delighted when I knew we had gotten the sports centre for our games.
Thank you to D2Y, Trybs, Bodhi, Buddhist friends, BUBS, SJBA and Incovar for actively participating. We hope to see you next year !!
Ok, so I was listening to Fly FM on the way back from basketball. This guy, called James wanted to ask his 'angel' out, so they could take things to the next 'level'.
When Fly FM (ie. Hafiz and Basil) called the girl, and explained to her that a guy wanted to take it to the next level. She started guessing who the guy was. First she guessed A, wrong. Then B, wrong again. Then I think Basil asked her, do you have many intimate relationships ? She answered she wouldn't say she's intimate but that she's friendly.
Next thing you know, Basil or Hafiz said double-O seven. And she guessed "James ?!@!!@ What the f*** ?!" Then the deejays asked her, why are you so angry all of a sudden.
She replied, "what the hell ? Are you f***ing kidding me ? there is no way I will go out with James". And all this while, James was on the line and he got offended (I mean, who wouldn't) and started to defend himself saying, we have been dating for over a year.
The girl replied "we never dated at all." Then Hafiz asked, "what are you and James ? Are you guys friends ?" The girl said "yeah we're just friends, no, I would think we are just acquiantances". OUCH !
Then James replied, "you hurt me deeply. All this while you led me on with those messages." And then the girl said "what messages ? I never sent you any messages." then James said (now I really think this part is made up) "what about those flowers you sent me on Valentine's Day ?". The girl shouted back "what flowers ? Don't make things up. You can't just call a radio station and embarass me in public !"
Now, seriously, which girl would send a guy flowers ?
And after that war broke up and James hung up suddenly.
Then ... Hafiz and Basil were like stunned. Then they composed themselves, told their listeners, if you wana go on a date with someone, call Flirty at Ten Thirty or if you wana be like them, you can call us too !! that was damn funny k .... and the best part is ...
THIS IS THE SECOND TIME I'VE HEARD IT. The first time also the guy wanted to ask the girl out but got busted.
I mean .... this has got to be a prank by the guy or the girl is seriously not interested in him ... you decide....
some days you play well ... some days you don't ....
anyway last Saturday morning was good ... we had dim sum after ball ... and it was just us guys ... too bad no pics to show ... the food was good too ....
feeling so tired nowadays ... is it work ? or is it just me ? or is it really work ? am foreseeing a long weekend ahead .... wonder how next week will be like ... damn random thoughts ... heck, if i was still studying ....
ah .... time to sleep .... august is a month to remember ...
10 minutes ago, I was hyped up. Now less so. But still ....
Looking back at my posts in March about how much I disliked my work, I'm actually pretty happy with how my day today turned out.
Work was terrible as I was lack of sleep and felt damn tired after 4 days of working. I practically struggled the whole day. Until dinner.
We had planned to go out for dinner today since like Monday and we finally did. It was the first time I hang out with my colleagues and all of them were my seniors. One thing I remember saying is, "we are not colleagues, we are friends."
It was just a simple dinner at mamak but I feel that working life has so much more meaning to it now. Too bad one of them has suddenly decided to quit.
Anyway, gotta sleep. A long weekend ahead. And lots of work to catch up on.
A guy who likes basketball alot and never fails to play it whenever he has the time. Values the importance of studies but also knows when to let loose and play his heart out. Hopes to have an impact in the lives of people he comes into contact with.
